…It can mean a condition or qualification; a requirement, or a
stipulation (Encarta ® World English
Dictionary). a conjunction used to indicate the
circumstances that would have to exist in order for an event to happen. The
event that God would have happen is Salvation for all… God is “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” 2 Pet. 3:9. The circumstances that would have to exist are the perfect
keeping of the laws of God; sinlessness and righteousness in our lives; a
devotion to and worship of God. Can't do it!
…we could keep
but two laws perfectly, we will have accomplished the whole law… “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and
great commandment. And the second is like unto it, thou shalt love thy neighbor
as thyself.” Matt. 22:37-39. Impossible since Adam.
It is utterly hopeless for us to achieve any sliver of salvation apart from
God, who has Himself provided the only way for us to be saved…
…we accept it.
Jesus said, “I am the Way, the
Truth and the Life: no man comes unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6
My Strongest Strong’s Concordance lists 1595 entries for the word “if”, and in most cases it means exactly what you think it means…conditional. Salvation is conditional.
if one accepts Jesus Christ as Savior, then one will be saved. Said another way...
if one calls upon the name of the Lord, one will be saved.
if one believes in his heart that Jesus is the Christ, then one will be saved.
Do we presume God does not put conditions or a
stipulation on His free gift of Grace? He does not forcibly shower Grace on
everyone. We must want it. We must ask for it, believing Him faithful to save
us from eternal death, through the sacrifice of His Son. And then what…are we
to become complacent in God’s Grace? No…but we are to continue in the faith,
and “press toward the mark
for the prize of the high calling”; we are to obey His commandments. Then would we be faithful unto
the end…
if we give ourselves to
this… “a living sacrifice…
which is our reasonable service” Rom. 12:1.
The following verses are
presented as only a small sampling of verses that contain the word “if” and therefore present a conditional situation
or a qualified event. It is my hope and intention that we would further study
the individual verses and reconcile their meaning to our lives. For
example...we should not assume Rom. 11:21&22 does not apply to believers…
“For if
God did not spare the
natural branches, He may not spare you either. Therefore consider the goodness
and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if
you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off.”
It most certainly
applies to believers. But how? What does it mean exactly?
We should not govern the
application of the Word of God in our life, but rather the Word of God should
be the government of our life. The first scripture reference is very
important...
“My son, if you receive my words, and treasure my
commands within you, so that you incline your ear to wisdom, and apply your
heart to understanding; yes, if you cry out for discernment, and lift up your voice for
understanding, if you seek her as silver, and search for her as for hidden
treasures; then you will understand the fear of the Lord, and find the
knowledge of God.” Prov. 2:1-5
“You are the salt of
the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is
then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”
Matt. 5:13
“For if
you forgive men their
trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you:
but if you forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” Matt. 6:14&15

say unto this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove;
and nothing shall be impossible unto you.” Matt. 17:20

in your sins.” John 8:24

by Me, if any man enters in, he
shall be saved…” John 10:9

command you.” John 15:14

of the body, you shall live.” Rom. 8:13
“And if children,
then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be
also glorified together.” Rom. 8:17
“if you shall confess with your mouth the Lord
Jesus, and shall believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the
dead, you shall be saved.” Rom. 10:9

that we know Him, if we keep his commandments.” 1 Jn. 2:3
“Love not the world,
neither the things that are in the world. if any man loves the world, the love of the
Father is not in him.” 1 Jn. 2:15
