What does “abomination” mean? …a
disgusting, wicked thing.
So… pretty much everything we do
is abominable to God. Having said that, let us explore what scripture says
about abomination and abominable, understanding that those who are being
abominable will find their own permissible
excuses for being so.
Thou shalt not lie with
mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.
Lev. 18:22
Neither shalt thou lie with any
beast to defile thyself therewith: neither shall any woman stand before a beast
to lie down thereto: it is confusion (violation
of nature or divine order, perversion). Leviticus 18:23
If a man also lies with mankind, as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. Lev. 20:13
The woman shall not wear that
which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for
all that do so are abomination unto
the LORD thy God. Deuteronomy 22:5
These six things does the LORD
hate: yea, seven are an abomination
unto him:
A proud look, a lying tongue,
and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked imaginations,
feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaks lies,
and he that sows discord among brethren. Proverbs 6: 16-19
They that are of a perverse
heart are abomination to the LORD:
but such as are upright in their way are his delight. Proverbs 11:20
Lying lips are abomination to the LORD: but they that
deal truly are his delight. Proverbs 12:22
The sacrifice of the wicked is
an abomination to the LORD: but the
prayer of the upright is his delight. Proverbs 15:8
The way of the wicked is an abomination unto the LORD: but he loves
him that follows after righteousness. Proverbs 15:9
The thoughts of the wicked are
an abomination to the LORD: but the
words of the pure are pleasant words. Proverbs 15:26
Every one that is proud in
heart is an abomination to the LORD:
though hand join in hand, he shall not be unpunished. Proverbs 16:5
He that justifies the wicked,
and he that condemns the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD. Proverbs 17:15
He that turns away his ear from
hearing the law, even his prayer shall be abomination.
Proverbs 28:9
For this cause God gave them up
unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that
which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of
the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that
which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error
which was meet. Romans 1:26-27
Know ye not that the
unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither
fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of
themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor
revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Cor. 6:9-10
Now the works of the flesh are
manifest, which are; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions,
heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the
which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which
do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians 5:19-21
Don’t you
just love ALL those scriptures!!
I wanted to
show all of these (and there are more…156)
because too many of us think that just homosexuality is abominable. In Proverbs
6, we are told of seven things the Lord hates
and are, in fact, abominable to Him.
Please note that He uses the word H A T E….
-PRIDE (right off the bat)
-LIES
-MURDERERS
-DEVISING
AND THINKING ABOUT DOING EVIL
-THE FOOL
THAT WANTONLY RUNS TO EVIL
-LIARS
-THE ONE WHO
SPREADS STRIFE AMONG THE BRETHREN
There are,
of course, many things within the category of “doing evil.” The way verse 6 is
written is an idiomatic way of expressing
an indefinite number (so they say). It is a Hebrew literary device
that is used to emphasize a list of things. The number “six” is the number
of/for man. The number “seven” indicates completeness or perfection. One could
allow themselves to believe that God is saying “man” is “completely” corrupt,
or (given to) evil. The list in
Proverbs 6 is a list of actions and attitudes that describes a person consumed
by evil. It lays out the characteristics of those who are hateful to the Lord
and who are bound to face His wrath some day.
It is a fearful thing to fall
into the hands of the living God. Hebrews 10:31
We cannot
fully comprehend the HOLINESS and PURITY of Almighty God and Jesus, so some
will not understand how something as (seemingly)
innocuous as LYING (white lies??) would
be an abominable thing, but it is as revolting to God as sexual perversions. So
while we may be appalled at the current “acceptance” of homosexuality, we must
face the shameful fact that we, all of us in the secular and “religious” world,
have apathetically “accepted” fornication
since (probably) the sixties, and
adultery for a lot longer… and LYING
for longer than that. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention ABORTION.
Sin Is Sin… period! And God hates sin. It is an abomination to Him. Notice in the
verses above that even thoughts and prayers “could” be abominations…Prov.
15:26 and Prov. 28:9. While I don’t believe we should be “activists” in the
political sense, I do believe the Christian voice has been significantly
silenced, because we have become lukewarm.
I know your deeds, that you are
neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot. So because you are
lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of My mouth. Revelation
3:15-16
Could that
happen?
