"What is in the Old concealed, is
in the New revealed" ~Augustine
If you keep reading the Old
Testament you will read about the mysteries of God that even the prophets didn’t
know about as Peter wrote, “Of this salvation the
prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that
would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time (when), the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating
when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories
that would follow (two advents). To
them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to you they
were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those
who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things
which angels desire to look into.” 1 Peter 1:10-12.
Let me preface with,
"The whole Bible is for our learning."
Romans 15:4 says, For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope.
Indeed!
But there is no doctrine for the New Testament, born-again saints in the Old Testament!
So how can you understand
without reading the New Testament? And then only the writings of Paul
the Apostle to the Gentiles, to which the mystery was revealed. Jesus didn’t
reveal any mysteries about the Church. Peter, James and John never revealed any mysteries about the Body of Christ. Only
to Paul were the mysteries that had been kept secret revealed,
“for the sake of His body, which is
the church, of which I (Paul) became
a minister according to the stewardship of God having been given to me for
you, that I might fulfill (complete) the word of God, the mystery having been
hidden from the past ages and from the past generations. But now it was
revealed to His saints, to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of
the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in
you, the hope of glory.”
Colossians. 1:25-27
Ephesians 3:4-6, “In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.”
Peter finally understood Paul’s
ministry. In 2 Peter 3:15-16 he writes, “Consider
that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother
Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, as also in
all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some
things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their
own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.”
Peter recommends to his Jewish followers to read ALL of Paul's epistles (letters) which Peter compares to "the rest of scriptures."
Paul wasn't so beloved when he came before Peter, James, and John to explain why he was going to the heathen dogs (Gentiles) and why aren't you preaching the law of Moses? Acts 15. They eventually agreed that Paul would go to the Gentiles and Peter, James, and John... and the rest of the "Jewish" Apostles would go only to the Jews. In fact, they never left Jerusalem, Acts 8:1. Even the Jewish believers (in Jesus as their Messiah) in their dispersion preached to none but Jews, Acts 11:19.
So, be careful to understand what scripture says to us today. We are not under the law of Moses, or any feast day, or the Sabbath; so don't say "I follow Peter." Be careful not to TWIST the Word
of God into something that is more agreeable to you, as many contemporary christians
do.
