Art For God

Like everything else, ART was ordained, instituted, and established for God and for His purposes. And like everything else, it has been perverted and corrupted.
Both in Genesis 4 and here in Exodus 31:2-5 the LORD declares His will...
“I, the LORD, have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God in SKILL, in UNDERSTANDING, in KNOWLEDGE, and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to make artistic designs for work with gold, with silver, and with bronze, and with cutting and setting stone, and with cutting wood, to work in ALL KINDS of craftsmanship.”

(The following qualities are the ways in which the Spirit’s enablement are displayed...
“SKILL” is the ability to produce something valuable to God and the community, “UNDERSTANDING” is the ability to distinguish between things, to perceive the best way to follow, and “KNOWLEDGE” is the experiential awareness of how things are done. ~NET Commentary)

(God will not put in an artist’s heart to make things that will elicit sinful responses in others (Mark 9:42). He will not lead a person to create that which contradicts His nature. Artisans who create idols may be skillful (Isaiah 40:19), but they’re using their skill to pervert God’s glory, not honor it. God dwells in “the perfection of beauty” (Psalm 50:2), and His holiness is beautiful (1 Chronicles 16:29 and Psalm 29:2). In creating God-glorifying art, the artist’s goal should be to lift the soul of man toward heaven and to illumine in new ways the multi-faceted beauty of God’s holiness, power, and grace. ~
Got Questions)

It is clearly evident, except perhaps to the artist, that “art” in general, is narcissistic at best and pornographically deviant at its worst. Your argument is with God.
“But Lord, Lord, I sculpted for Your glory!”
“Depart from me, I never knew you.” Matt. 7:23

I think of the masterpiece –
  “La Pieta”
by Michelangelo who also painted the Sistine Chapel. Those religious works get no one into heaven, according to Jesus...
“No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
John 14:6

I enjoy art in various forms very much, but it’s carnal. I have painted, I have “made” things of wood, I have written poetry, I appreciate the quality of work that makes custom cars, I enjoy art in the garden, and I enjoy and have played music. BUT IT IS CARNAL! And these rock & roll bands in churches are dangerous; not to me... to them. It is the flesh that lusts after such pleasure, and the flesh is at war with the Spirit, Gal. 5:17. Unless the Spirit of God is in it, as mentioned above, it is idolatry... period! And just because it is in a church, does not mean the Spirit is in it. If the piety of worship is not in one’s heart, there is no worship... just noise. We don't need more Bible teachers, we need more Bible students.
