“...for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Rom. 3:23
But let’s back up to verse 9 a
minute...
Are we
better than the Jew? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and
Greeks that they are all under sin. As it is written:
“There is none righteous, no, not one” Psalm 14:3
“There is none who understands” Psalm 53:2
“There is none who seeks after God” Isaiah 64:7
“They have all turned aside” Isaiah 53:6
“They have together become unprofitable” Isaiah 64:6
“There is none who does good, no, not one” Psalm 14:1
“Their throat is an open tomb” Psalm 5:9"
“With their tongues they have practiced deceit” Psalm 140:3
“The poison of asps is under their lips” Psalm 3:13
“Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness” Psalm 10:7
“Their feet are swift to shed blood” Isaiah 59:7
“Destruction and misery are in their ways” Isaiah 59:8
“And the way of peace they have not known” Jeremiah 6:16
“There is no fear of God before their eyes” Psalm 36:1
So we see from the sampling that Paul uses in Romans that we are condemned by many verses, and in fact, throughout the Bible over many years of historical scripture. God's Word (law) says, The soul that sins shall die, Ezekiel 18:20.
Continuing in Romans 3:19... Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God. Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation (mercy-seat) by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. Rom. 3:9-26
We are not sinners because we sin,
but we sin because we ARE sinners! We are born sinners because of Adam. The
name Adam means simply “man” ... Gen. 2:7, The Lord
God formed man (adam) of the dust of
the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a
living being.
The fall (loss of position,
dominion, headship) of Adam (man) happened when he disobeyed ONE
commandment of God. Therefore the fall of MAN happened the same instant.
Now, this was a loss for God too. Righteous Adam (man) was now and forever physically, spiritually, mentally, emotionally... in every way, corrupted by sin (satan)... made UN-righteous. What Adam discovered when he saw his nakedness was the loss of righteousness. Adam (man) lost fellowship, communion with God, and God lost communion with man. satan had stolen God’s possession. God provided a “covering” (atonement) in the form of (innocent) animal skins (lamb?) which God Himself sacrificed first for the salvation of man by the shedding of innocent blood, Heb. 9:22.
Man and creation belonged to God. satan kidnapped man and put him in bondage. It would cost God to redeem man. It would cost Him another Man... His own Son, the last Adam, created without sin (like Adam) but obedient to the end. Sacrificed innocently (without sin) under no condemnation of death (because He was sinless), but voluntarily submitting to death so as to defeat and conquer death and satan for those He would make righteous. All one has to do is believe God did all this in Christ Jesus for you.
