Isaiah 9:6-7, For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the
government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful,
Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase
of His government and peace there will be no end... upon the throne of David
and over His kingdom, to order it and establish it with judgment and justice
from that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will
perform this.
In Isaiah 52:14, we read about how Jesus suffered before and during the crucifixion... The literal rendering is terrible: "So marred from the form of man was His aspect that His appearance was not that of a son of man"--i.e. not human--the effect of the brutalities described in Matt. 26 and 27... says Scofield.
That was prophecy. Then 700 years later, His birth is announced...
And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”
CRUCIFY HIM! We will
not have this man to reign over us!
Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” Then Mary said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her.
CRUCIFY HIM!
From the beginning, death pursued Him.
King Herod ordered the
deaths of every male child under two years old... The Massacre of the
Innocents, Matt. 2:16-18, Then Herod, when he saw that he was deceived by the wise men,
was exceedingly angry; and he sent forth and put to death all the male children
who were in Bethlehem and in all its districts, from two years old and under,
according to the time which he had determined from the wise men.
Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying: “A voice
was heard in Ra-mah’, lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel
weeping for her children, refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.”
But 12 years later, Jesus as a boy said to His mother, “Why did you seek Me? Did you
not know that I MUST be about My Father’s business?” Luke 2:49.
Later on Jesus would say in Luke 12:50 “But I have a baptism to be
baptized with; and how am I CONSTRAINED (pressed of necessity) until it be accomplished!”
We just heard in Luke 2:49 I MUST be about my Father’s business.
And in Luke 24:26 Was it not NECESSARY
for the Christ to suffer these things and [only then to] enter His glory?
Yes, it was NECESSARY that Jesus be baptized with the “business” His Father gave Him to do. I am reminded of the line from “A Christmas Carol” where Marley said... “Mankind was my business!”
Jesus went about doing good... healing the sick, feeding the
hungry, raising the dead, giving sight to the blind, casting out demons, cleansing
lepers, giving hope to the hopeless, He was compassionate and forgiving... He
did all things well and in Him God was well pleased. His whole life is a
manifestation of DOING the will of His Father. In John 5:17, Jesus
said, “My Father works even now, and so I also work.”
And yet... CRUCIFY HIM!
Isaiah 53:10, It was the Lord’s will to CRUSH
Him and cause Him to suffer, and the Lord makes his life an offering
for sin... Jesus was the Lamb of God. He is called the Lamb of God because He
is the necessary sacrifice which God has set forth to be the propitiation,
which, although more complex, it simply means, God is satisfied.
The sacrificial system of the Jews required a blood sacrifice from
the beginning when God Himself slew an animal (sheep-lamb) in
order to make “coats” of skins to “cover” Adam’s nakedness (unrighteousness).
The “scapegoat” in the Levitical sacrifice could temporarily “atone” for one’s
sin by dying in the sinner’s stead. Atonement in the Old Testament means, “to
cover” but the sin did not go away as John the Baptist testified of
Jesus, “Behold the Lamb of God Who TAKES AWAY the
sin of the world.” John 1:29
In essence God took His own wrath and judgement out on Himself, He
being His own sacrifice. But since God cannot bleed, and scripture says, Without the shedding of blood
there is no remission of sin, Heb. 9:22; nor could He die, and the
Law requires death for sin... He needed His own body... the man Christ Jesus,
sinless – One Who did not deserve to die but would do so voluntarily in order
to defeat sin in death... by the Resurrection.
But those, mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring here, and slay them before me. Luke 19:27
Heb. 10:30-31 says, For we know Him that has said, Vengeance belongs unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge His people.
It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
