THE ILLUSION OF CHRISTIAN AMERICA

"Rather than acting as resident aliens of a heavenly kingdom, too often we sound (and act) like resident apologists for a Christian America. … Unless we reject the false reliance on the illusion of Christian America, evangelicalism will continue to distort the gospel and thwart a genuine biblical identity."  ~John Seel, The Evangelical Pulpit

There are Christians in America, but there is no Christian America. Ours is a nation of many religions… there is one group that worships the true God in the only Way… and then there are all the others. I know the argument that Christian forefathers founded this country on Biblical principles and under the direction of the Holy Spirit because God wanted a Christian nation. I vigorously disagree with that, as a generalization, but let's say for the sake of argument it is true.
Perhaps, that was the INTENT, although I cannot accept that premise which allows and condones slavery and swindles or annihilates Native Americans to take their land (something about "Manifest Destiny"). Well… what they intended and what God got are two very different things. For God, I imagine it was like dealing with Israel all over again.

This nation was NOT founded as a "Christian" nation. It was founded, by religious men (although I wonder about Jefferson and Franklin) as a nation in which there would be freedom of religion, under God, which I presume addressed Baptists, Lutherans, Methodists, Quakers…whatever; within the “Christian” umbrella. I am certain there were NO muslims at the Constitutional Convention. But as it has come to be interpreted, it now means ANY religion… with a god or goddess… true God or false gods… does not matter anymore. So, the framers were wrong from the beginning in that they were all part of the very schisms that the Apostle Paul warned about, and God rejects as anti-Christ.

“Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.”  Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Cor. 1:10-13

The very freedoms which were established in sincere moral judgment, have deteriorated into license to do evil. In other words… the more freedoms we get, the more we sin.

And now we have some in congress wanting to rewrite the Constitution because it is "flawed" and will want to do so from the Supreme Court, if they get their way. No… the testimony of this country's "morality" is to be found in Romans 1:28-32…
“And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful; and although they know the ordinance of God, that those who practice such things are worthy of death, they not only do the same, but also give hearty approval to those who practice them.

This is not a Christian nation. It is a nation that tolerates Christians… so far.
The day of judgment for this nation is coming soon.

There have been over 43,000,000 abortions over a 30 year period between 1973 and 2003 in America alone. That's an average of about 1.4 million a year… every year…almost 4000 per day… every day. That figure is more like 50,000,000 today.
That alone disqualifies America as being a Christian nation.

The illusion of holiness has brought this nation to where we are today. The consequences of having believed a lie have brought us to a point where no one wants to hear the truth,
"And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber." 2 Pet. 2:2-3.

America, by its very homogenization cannot be Christian, or any other singular religion, any more than it can be one skin color, or of one ethnicity. Who are we kidding? Even Christians demonstrate we cannot be one! Have you ever stopped to consider how many factions and "schisms" Christianity has compared to other religions? This has come in large measure because of a lack of persecution, in my opinion, which would have had the effect of not only concentrating true believers in the true Church, but also making us stronger and well defined.

"Even today there are legions of born-again Christians who have absolutely no skill at integrating their beliefs about Christ with the details of their daily life, especially their views of government. They may be "saved," but they are completely ineffectual as salt and light… moral authority was not stolen from us; we surrendered it through neglect… Success for the Christian cannot be measured in numbers or political muscle, but only in faithfulness. Our most important weapon is not our voting power, but the power of the truth freely spoken and freely heard. ~~Gregory Koukl, Stand to Reason

Most of us, for our own protection, have no clue of the extent and depth of evil and wickedness in the world. And our nation is by no means exempt. In fact, it is probably a world leader in the exercise of sin. We have though, for the most part, "heard of" the evil in this country…
pornography - how evil and repulsive does this get?;
abortion - this is wholesale slaughter, NOT "choice". The "choice" is, let it live, or kill it. So one is either pro-life or pro-murder. A mother has no special, unique "rights" to take any life;
homosexuality - not just "a sin" like stealing, but vile behavior, abomination.

This kind of widespread, pernicious immorality does NOT recognize the Lord God as its Sovereign, but rather the father of sin as its destroyer, who is - "the prince of the power of the air" Eph. 2:2. Why do so many of us think we need to pray for this nation's "healing", or for a national "revival"? It appears we do not want to accept that the END is coming. The "end days" will NOT see a resurgence to the Lord, but a Great Falling Away! We won't change that by voting for a republican, and probably only facilitate the "end" by voting for a democrat.

Too many of those from "ecumenical" Christianity speak of God, goodness, benevolence, and especially morality… which the world tolerates… it will "bear" that "brotherly love" message. But it will not tolerate the preaching of Christ! Christ is the only way. The preaching of Christ exposes the evils of the human heart. Preaching Christ tells the hearer that they are DEAD in sin… they have no hope in themselves of salvation. Whether they are "virtuous" or immoral, unless they are born again into a living faith and "count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus" (Phil 3:8)… they will not be saved. This is the message this nation will not tolerate… it will not bear it!

Anyone who preaches Christ will be called a fool, bigot, crazy and names I haven't heard yet. And so they did the Apostles, and worse! We are not "better" than the Apostles that we should not be persecuted and hated. If you have not elicited such attitudes, you should wonder whether you are sharing the true gospel, because you can be sure of this… the offense of the cross has not ceased! You know… there are atheists who blame Christians for the existence of the "unbelieving culture" because of what they observe to be "the failure of Christian believers to provide a thoughtful, winsome, and life-affirming alternative".

This is not God's nation… this is satan’s world.
