THE CHRIST

Then He (Jesus) said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”  And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures. Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day.  Luke 24:44-46

I think I would be safe (relatively) in saying everyone refers to The Lord as Jesus Christ….like we would say John Smith, or George Carpenter, or Edward Fletcher, or Dave Thomson. Those names evolved from a unique description of the individual, such as… John the Smith (blacksmith); or George the carpenter; or Edward the fletcher (put feathers on arrows); or Dave, Tom’s son. This is how many “surnames” came about… a means to differentiate between one George from another. Some surnames were derived from occupations, some from character traits, others from geographical areas or characteristics, still others from patriarchal or matriarchal and even “clan” names.

Point is… Christ is NOT the last name of Jesus, although it does describe Him. He was referred to, on occasion, as Jesus of Nazareth in all four Gospels and the book of Acts… He “might have been” referred to locally as Jesus the carpenter, or Jesus - Joseph’s son. He is referred to many times as, The Christ. What does that mean?

Etymologically speaking, our word Christ (from Greek) is the same as Messiah (from Hebrew).  It means simply “Anointed One” and it was usually applied to kings such as Saul and David…sometimes prophets or priests.
John 1:41 He (Andrew) first found his brother Simon (Peter), and said unto him, "We have found the Messiah", which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
Christ is Greek for the Hebrew word "Messiah." Both translate to The Anointed One.

The name Jesus means Salvation.
And she shall bring forth a Son, and she shall call his name Yeshua (Hebrew), for he shall save his people from their sins. Matt. 1:21
For Your salvation (ישועה ...YeshuaI wait, O LORD (יהוה ...Yehovah). Gen. 49:18
The name Joshua, in the Hebrew is יהושע...Y@howshuwa` …yeh-ho-shoo'-ah, meaning Jehovah is salvation. The name Jesus, in the Greek is ιησούς ...Iesous ...ee-ay-sooce', meaning the exact same thing… Jehovah is salvation. In the Old Testament, the word salvation in the Hebrew is, Y@shuw`ah…Yeshua which is how the Jews would have pronounced “Jesus.”

Point is… Jesus IS Savior God.
The Christ was/is pre-existent, as God the Son… “slain from the foundation of the world.” Flesh and bones cannot be pre-existent. We sometimes erroneously interchange and substitute the name Jesus with the name Christ, and vice versa. Jesus (the man) was no where in the Old Testament history except as God the Son (pre-incarnate), the Christ, the Holy Sacrifice of God Himself for man, the Vicarious Atonement, which is The Christ. Jesus the man was not at Creation, but the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (CHRIST) was. Jesus is the Incarnate God the Son… The Christ.

Greek = χριστός = Christ = Anointed
Hebrew = משיח = Messiah = Anointed

Jesus’ title of “Christ” means He is God’s Anointed Savior, God’s Salvation, the One who fulfills the Old Testament prophecies, the Chosen Savior, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world, who came to save sinners (1 Timothy 1:15), and the King of kings who is coming back again to set up His Kingdom on earth (Zechariah 14:9).

...God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power: Who went about doing good , and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38
